Bowen Yang to Star in Broadway's 'Oh, Mary!'

Bowen Yang is officially the new Mary Todd Lincoln.

The SNL star and Wicked actor will begin a 12-week engagement in Broadway’s “Oh, Mary!” on September 15 at the Lyceum Theatre. He will succeed Meg Stalter in the leading role, who began her run on July 6.

“My friendship with Cole has brought me many places over the years: late-night pizzerias, cross-borough social-distance walks, a tough production of Les Misérables sung in Dutch,” Yang said in a statement. “But being part of their deranged and profound masterpiece, Oh, Mary!, is my favorite one by far. I will spend the rest of my life thanking them for the best Broadway debut a cis gay guy with limited singing ability could ask for.”

Each will join current cast members Phillip James Brannon as Mary’s husband, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s chaperone, and Barrett Foa as Mary’s teacher. Tony Macht will re-join the company alongside Yang on September 15, stepping-in as Mary’s husband’s assistant after Ryo Kamibayashi.

Written by Escola, “Oh, Mary!” centers on Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The play presents a stylized and comedic interpretation of the historical figure, depicting her as a cabaret-focused and unpredictable personality.

The production premiered Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2024, where its run was extended three times. It later transferred to Broadway the same year. At the 2025 Tony Awards, “Oh, Mary!” won two honors: Lead Actor in a Play for Escola and Direction of a Play for Sam Pinkleton.
