Ticketmaster’s New Identity Verification Process Leaves Customers With Privacy Concerns

Ticketmaster is hoping to combat mass scalping with its new identity verification process, but many customers are feeling weary about giving up their privacy.

The identity verification process requires some customers to submit selfies and their government issued ID. Ticketmaster noted on its website that the software company Persona checks the submitted photo against the ID photo and looks for indications that the ID may be fake. The ticketing giant’s said this process is to “help give real fans — not bots — a fair shot at getting tickets.”

The company’s website also disclosed that Persona retains biometric data for no more than 60 days for successful verifications, while unsuccessful verifications may lead to data being retained for up to three years for fraud prevention purposes. Ticketmaster’s customer disclosures added that Persona did not share data with third parties except to the extent necessary to perform identity verification and prevent fraud and abuse.

Eventgoers, however, aren’t feeling too keen on the idea, citing privacy concerns. Many took to social media over the last few weeks to share their thoughts:

In response to angry fans, Ticketmaster Fan Support has issued a blanket-response comment:

“In some cases, Ticketmaster may require a Security Check through Persona to help verify account ownership and keep accounts secure. Most fans only need to complete a quick selfie check, but some may be asked to provide a photo ID.”
