Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey Reunite for West End ‘Sunday in the Park with George’

Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey are set to reunite onstage in the West End revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Sunday in the Park with George,” scheduled to run at London’s Barbican Centre in summer 2027. 

The announcement confirms months of speculation following the global success of the two-part film adaptation of “Wicked,” which paired the performers as co-stars on screen.

The production brings together an award-winning creative team, led by Tony- and Olivier-winning director Marianne Elliott, whose recent work includes the acclaimed West End and Broadway revival of “Company.” Tony Award winner Tom Scutt will design the production, overseeing the visual world of the musical, which is inspired by Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

For Bailey, the revival marks a reunion with Elliott after their collaboration on “Company.” The production also signals Grande’s return to live theater. Although widely known for her music career and recent film work, Grande began her professional journey on Broadway, appearing in “13” in 2008. 

First premiering on Broadway in 1984, “Sunday in the Park with George” won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and has since become one of Sondheim’s most studied and performed works. With a book by Lapine and a score by Sondheim, the musical explores the obsessive drive of painter Georges Seurat as he works toward completing his iconic canvas.

The musical’s most recent Broadway revival opened in 2017, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford. That production had been scheduled to transfer to London in 2020, but plans were abandoned as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters. 

The 2027 revival will be produced by Empire Street Productions in association with the Barbican. Tickets are set to go on sale in May 2026 and will be available exclusively through the Barbican’s official website and box office. Additional details can be found at SundayIntheParkMusical.com.
