Chris Brown pleaded guilty to an assault that took place at a London nightclub in 2023.
The rapper, who previously denied the charges, changed his plea during a hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court last week. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon. His friend and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu also pled guilty.
Both men are set to stand trial in October.
The charges stem from an incident in 2023 that took place at Tape nightclub, where prosecutors claimed Brown attacked producer Abraham Diaw with a bottle. Additionally, prosecutors claimed Akinlolu joined in and “punched the victim in the head.” Prosecutors showed the fight caught on surveillance cameras.
Although Brown left the UK, he was arrested in May 2025 when he returned to Manchester for a concert. He was free on $6.7 million bail, which allowed him to tour across Europe and North America last year.
“Chris Brown and Omololu Akinlolu on February 19 2023 used or threatened unlawful violence towards another and their conduct taken together was such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety,” read the charge accepted by the defendants.
Brown faces a maximum of three years in prison. He will be sentenced on October 26.
Currently, Brown is touring North America on a co-headlining run with Usher. “The $&B (Raymond & Brown) Tour” kicked-off in June and is set to run through December.
Brown is not new to legal woes; in 2009, he pleaded guilty to a felony assault for leaving his then-girlfriend Rihanna hospitalized. From there, more altercations continued including him throwing a chair at a dressing room window during a meltdown in 2011 and he was involved in a nightclub brawl in New York City in 2012. Then, in 2013 he was arrested for felony assault, followed by numerous allegations and detainments in various cities over the next several years.
