Sphere Entertainment and DISCOVERY Children’s Museum are bringing back “Sphere Weekend” for a second year, inviting families to explore the technology and creativity behind The Wizard of Oz at Sphere ahead of the immersive production’s first anniversary.
The two-day event takes place August 8-9 at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum in downtown Las Vegas and is included with general museum admission. Designed to blend art, science and technology, the weekend features a series of hands-on STEAM activities inspired by Sphere’s reimagining of the beloved classic.
“Curiosity sparked by wonder can inspire future innovators,” Rich Constable, Global Head of Government Affairs and Social Impact at Sphere, said in a press release. “Through The Wizard of Oz at Sphere and experiences like Sphere Weekend, we hope to inspire the next generation to explore careers in STEAM-related fields. As part of our ongoing commitment to the greater Las Vegas community, Sphere is proud to continue its five-year investment in DISCOVERY’s youth education programs, now entering its second year.”
Among the featured activities are an Apple Drop Challenge, where children engineer protective devices for apples dropped from a free-fall tower; a live Tornado in Oz science demonstration; a Code the Yellow Brick Road robotics experience; digital animation workshops; DIY versions of Sphere’s mascot Orbi; and a drone obstacle course highlighting flight technology used at the venue.
“Sphere Weekend showcases the power of partnership to bring art, technology, and innovation to life for our community,” said Laura Christian, Interim CEO of DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. “Together, we are inspiring children and families to explore, create, and imagine what’s possible through immersive, future-focused experiences.”
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9.
Sphere Weekend serves as both a community outreach initiative and a celebration of the continued success of The Wizard of Oz at Sphere, which has helped showcase the venue’s immersive storytelling capabilities while expanding its educational efforts in Southern Nevada.
