‘Spring Awakening’ Revival Reveals Complete Off-Broadway Cast

Complete principal casting has been announced for the upcoming Off-Broadway revival of “Spring Awakening,” directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor.

Performances will begin November 27 at Studio Seaview, with an official opening scheduled for December 17.

Tyler Jordan Wesley will play Melchior opposite Ashlyn Maddox as Wendla. The principal company also includes Ryo Kamibayashi as Moritz and Amalia Yoo as Ilse.

The remaining principal cast features Jack Bateman as Georg, Jada Simone Clark as Thea, Leif Coomer as Ernst, Nando Morland as Otto, Antonio Porciello as Hänschen, Khadija Sankoh as Martha and Grace Slear as Anna.

Taymor will direct the revival with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall, who is making her theatrical debut. Or Matias will provide music supervision.

The creative team includes scenic designers Christine Jones and Brett Banakis, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, sound designer Cody Spencer and special-effects designer Jeremy Chernick. Cynthia Meng will serve as music director and conductor.

Featuring music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, “Spring Awakening” is based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play. The musical first opened on Broadway in 2006 with a cast that included Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr. It won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.

Deaf West Theatre staged a Broadway revival in 2015 under the direction of Michael Arden. That production integrated American Sign Language and spoken English, earning three Tony Award nominations.
